Podcast Script

This is the script for my podcast, it follows typical conventions as it has been printed in 12 point Courier and also shows in brackets when there will be pauses for music.

Magazine Cover

This is my original image. I used Photoshop to edit the image and add a masthead, and cover lines to it. I decided to keep my magazine cover simple as it is a jewellery magazine and all the focus should be on the jewellery. I played around with the levels, contrast and highlights of the image to create this effect.

This is the final image for the cover of 'Amour,' magazine.

Animatic for Music Video (Be Mine - Ellie Goulding + Erik Hassle)

At the moment for some bizarre reason there is no sound :( but I will get it sorted. At least the video is up :D

Lyrics for Be Mine - Ellie Goulding ft. Erik Hassle

Ellie:     It's a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain
As if a good thing ever could make up for all the pain
There'll be no last chance to promise to never mess it up again
Just a sweet pain of watching your back as you walk
As I'm watching you walk away

And now you're gone it's like an echo in my head
And I remember every word you said

Erik:      It's a cruel thing you'll never know all the ways I tried
It's a hard thing faking a smile when I feel like I'm falling apart inside

And now you're gone it's like an echo in my head
And I remember every word you said

Ellie:    And you never were
and you never will be mine
           No you were never were
and you never will be mine

Erik:     For the first time there is no mercy in your eyes
And the cold winds hitting my face and you're gone
           And you're walking away, away

Erik and Ellie:    And I am helpless sometimes
                       Wishing's just no good
Cause you don't see me like I wish you would

Erik and Ellie:   Cause you never were and you never will be mine
No you never were and you never will be mine

Erik and Ellie:  There's a moment to seize every time we meet
But you always keep passing me by
But you never were and you never will be mine
No you were never were and you never will be mine

Erik and Ellie: There's a moment to seize every time that we meet
But you always keep passing me by
But you never were and you never will be mine

Treatment for Be Mine- Ellie Goulding ft. Erik Hassle

The video will be in black and white, as it is a slow song and it will help portray the emotions within the song.

The video will start with an argument between Ellie and Erik. This will be a long shot so that you can see their body language. Towards the end of the argument, the music will start, and the first verse will not be mimed. There will be a close up of Ellie starting to cry, this will connect the lyrics and visuals as she will cry on 'Its a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain.' The couple will still be arguing and Erik will walk towards the door with Ellie running after him. This will be shot as a long shot and a pan. Erik will open the door and walk away. This shot will be filmed from the outside of the house in a long shot. 'Just the sweet pain of watching your back as you walk,' will be a close up of Ellie standing in the doorway. This close up will fit the record label's needs as it will show who she is and make her recognisable if people don't know who she is. The next shot will be a POV shot, panning across seeing Erik walk down the street and away from her, on the lyrics, 'As I'm watching you walk away.' There will then be another close up of Ellie. As she closes the door there will be a fade in the corner, of the argument that they just had and Erik will be shouting at her. This will tie in with the lyrics 'And now your gone its like an echo in my head, and I remember every word you said.' On this last section of lyrics, Ellie will have walked into the dining room and have sat down.

Erik will be walking down the street in the next shot miming along to, 'Its a cruel thing you'll never know all the ways I tried. Its a hard thing faking a smile when I feel like I'm falling apart inside.' This will be a close up to suit his record label's needs, as in the UK Erik Hassle, at the moment, isn't very well known. The next shot will be a long shot of Erik walking down the street with cars going past him. He will be walking in slow motion, and there will be a clip of the couple arguing with Ellie shouting at him on the lyrics, 'And now your gone its like an echo in my head and I remember every word you said.'

We will then go back to Ellie who is sitting at the dining room table, this shot will be a close up of her profile. Running her hands through her hair she will sing, 'And you never were and you never will be mine, no you never were and you never will be mine.'

Erik will still be walking down the street and with the lyrics 'For the first time,' there will be a close up of him. And with the lyrics 'There is no mercy in your eyes,' until, 'You're walking away, away,' There will be a shot of Ellie going into the kitchen making a drink.

There will then be a split screen of Erik and Ellie, filmed in a close up, They will both be singing 'And I am helpless sometimes wishing's just no good, cause you don't see me like I wish you would.' This split screen will then zoom out into a mid shot of Erik and Ellie.

Erik will have found a bench to sit on and will get his phone out. The split screen will then go and there will be an over the shoulder shot of Erik on his phone. His wallpaper will be him and Ellie together. There will then be a close up of Erik looking upset.

Ellie will then see a photo of her and Erik together and take it back to the dining room table where she was before. There will be various different shots of her looking at the photo of them together. On the lyrics 'But you never were and you never will be mine, no you never were and you never will be mine.' Ellie will put the photo face down on the table and walk away from it.

The next main shot will be of Erik on the bench but Ellie will be in one of the corners singing along. Ellie will be a slight fade but clear enough so that you can see her. 'But you never were and you never will be mine,' the final lyrics of the song will see Erik walk away from the bench and Ellie putting her head down, to show that she is upset.

Analysis of Music Video

Video - 'Telephone' by Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce

I am analysing 'Telephone,' by Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce. It was directed by Jonas Akerlund, he has directed 'Paparazzi,' by Lady Gaga as well. The music video belongs to the Pop genre. You would expect to see dance routines, visuals that connect with the lyrics and cuts on the beat of the music.

At the beginning of the video, Lady Gaga answers the phone and Beyonce is on the other end. The lyrics 'I have got no service in the club, you see, you see,' contradict the visuals, as Gaga is in a prison (Telephone is the sequel to Paparazzi, where she ended up in a Police station). Most of the visuals contradict the lyrics in this music video. There are occasional moments in the music video where the lyrics are illustrated, such as, 'Tonight I'm not taking no calls, 'cause I'll be dancin',' At this point in the song, Beyonce has a phone sitting next to her on her bed and she is also dancing. There is no reference to a club, or dance floor in the visuals, but they are in the lyrics. This is typical of Lady Gaga, as she rarely has a relationship between lyrics and visuals in her music videos.

The video is cut to the beat, and has been edited into phrases, some of these phrases being in the cafe, and in the kitchen of the cafe. At the beginning of the video, Lady Gaga is on the phone, and as the beat changes she drops the phone on the floor. The shot also changes to the beat at 25 seconds. A few seconds after that she dances and it is edited to beat, 2 different shots are used for this, these being a close up and a long shot. The scene then changes to Lady Gaga in a police tape costume. There is then a sound of what seems to be someone dialing a telephone and the shot changes every time you hear the sound. The music then changes drastically into a harder hitting beat and you see Lady Gaga and Beyonce in a car. This shot is a wide shot but at a medium close up. Every time there is a drum beat in the song, the camera that Lady Gaga is holding flashes. This scene uses fast editing so it goes along with the beat. Fast editing is used throughout the whole video due to the pace of the song. When Lady Gaga's voice changes in the next segment of the song, one shot is played quickly a few times to go along with the music. When the song becomes more fluid and slower the visuals fade in and out of each other. Although the editing is still fast. When 'mechanical,' sounds get used in the song the visuals change but they use an image of a knife and fork to do this. When there are hard hitting bits in the music, Lady Gaga and Beyonce both do a big dance move to fill this part of the music.

Close ups are constantly used in this video to promote the artist. Nearly every other shot is a close up and this is the way the record label want to sell this track. Lady Gaga is famously known for being different and creating videos that test the boundaries. This video relates to Gaga's 'Paparazzi,' video as it is the follow on. At the end of that video we see Gaga at a police station and in the beginning of 'Telephone,' Gaga is in that same prison. There is no change of image apart from Gaga having yellow in her hair.

Gaga is obviously on sexual display as in one part she is only wearing police tape and throughout the video she is seen in lingerie, and skimpy outfits. A camera is used in the video which gives a slight notion of looking but not a lot as you don't see the images.

There is an intertextual reference as the video takes scenes from Thelma and Louise; these scenes are in the cafe and the car driving away at the end.

The video is narrative based as Gaga gets out of jail and carries on killing people, just like she did in 'Paparazzi,'

Overall I think this video is everything Gaga wants to be; extrovert, amazing, different and creative. Her videos inspire people to be who they want to be, and tell people that they can do anything they want to do.

Print Pre-Production

Brainstorm of the name of my band, album name and tracklisting:

Primary Research Into CD Package Design:

Different types of packaging:

Research on other album covers and packaging. I had to do this rather than analysing my artists previous covers, as I have created my band and they have no previous artwork.

This is a moodboard of what the band would be styled like, and words and images associated with their style. I decided to keep the moodboard quite free with lots of gaps, as 'Vowel Please,' is an Alternative/Indie group, and this reflects the genre.

This is an influence sheet of the images, and album covers that will inspire my choices:

A report on the responses that I had when I interviewed 3 members of my target audience:

Unit 2 Student Evaluation

Before I started A Level Media, I had already completed a Media GCSE. I had basic skills of how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, Garageband and Final Cut. I feel that my skills have grown massively throughout Unit 2 as I can now work independently on Photoshop and I'm not scared to test things and try things out. I will still ask for help if I am struggling with certain things or if I don't know how to do something. I used Photoshop to create my magazine cover. I had previously made a magazine cover in GCSE so I found this simple to do and it didn't take me long to complete it. I think that my cover is suitable for its audience as it isn't packed with cover lines or splashes. It is simple and only has a few cover lines so the audience is not distracted. I struggled with Garageband as I found this hard to use in Year 10 when I did it in ICT. I found the program very confusing and long winded, I wouldn't like to use it again as I found it difficult to use. I used Garageband to make my podcast. I feel that my podcast wasn't very good as I couldn't think of an original idea, so I talked about the Top 10 singles in that weeks chart. Many people in my class did this as it was the quickest idea to come up with. My skills on Illustrator are still very small as I haven't done too much on it, but I have used it a few times to help my A Level Graphics course. We used Final Cut Express to create Special Effect videos and a continuity exercise. I already knew the basics of Final Cut as in GCSE I had made a full length music video as part of my coursework. I find making videos fun as it allows me to become quite creative instead of making a podcast or a magazine cover, which I do find quite boring.

I get involved and interested in other people's work as they could be doing something that I don't know what to do and I will be able to learn off them and this will add to my skills. When I give feedback I usually walk past people's work saying that I like it or I will give feedback that could improve their work. If people ask me for help I will go and help them, as it lets me practice my skills. When I research for my work I use an influence map, as this creates a canvas of images that I can take ideas from and use in my work. I like to use this method as its different from just putting pictures into a Word document and printing them off or putting them into Blogger. I like my presentation to be neat as I think that it makes my Unit look more professional. we had to present our treatment to the class to get positive and negative feedback. We sat around a table and read out our treatments with our chosen song playing in the background. I was open to the feedback I got from the group and I took one of the comments on board and added it to my video at the end. Looking at the video now I think it was a good scene to put in as it provided a twist and something to shock the viewer.

I think I work well under direction as I follow all the instructions that are given to me. I will always try and do something for myself so I don't have to ask for help again. In a group I tend to try and take control, but we haven't done much group work apart rom our continuity and special effects videos. When we do videos I prefer to be behind the camera rather than in the frame, but I gave another person in my group the chance to record.

I think I am quite creative as I think of crazy ideas that I would never be able to do, so I have to revert to a simpler idea. I work accurately and meet my deadlines. I hate being late so I stay behind longer and work in most of frees to make sure everything is in on time. I use the college's media equipment quite a lot, but more often I use their Mac's and Macbook's. I use these as all the Media I have done has been on a Mac and I know all the controls and shortcuts. Using a PC would be completely different and would probably confuse me.

I support other members of my group in their work and help them to meet deadlines if they are struggling to do something. I share tasks out as I like to be assigned a role that lets me get on with things. Having a deadline with a group is more challenging as you may not have a group that gets on with things and are lazy. When this happens I tend to get stressed as I like things to be finished on time. I often give feedback on my peers work as I like to give constructive feedback to them.

I could improve my skills by making videos, posters and podcasts in my free's and I could also improve them by attending educational courses and by doing work experience at a media or graphic design company. I would improve my skills on the areas I am not too good at so these would be Illustrator, Garageband and Final Cut.
